Calvary Hospital is based in the Bronx, New York with a campus in Brooklyn. We provide palliative care, which is the active treatment of the symptoms, not the cure of the disease, in order to make our patients as comfortable as possible. Our programs include inpatient care, case management, outpatient care, hospice, home care and support programs for families and friends.

Children in our Palliative Care Program are mainstreamed in the Pediatric Center and receive education, recreation, and rehabilitation along with other children as appropriate to their individual abilities and needs. The Institute was officially inaugurated in 1995 with an educational initiative funded by the Project on Death in America. Clinical services began in 1997 with the creation of an in-patient consultation service. In 1998, the program was privately endowed and renamed the Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute. Through our acclaimed clinical services, renowned research programs, and diversified educational initiatives, the Institute is helping to set the standard for palliative care throughout the United States.

A team of professionals provides ongoing services to enhance quality of life, giving attention to both patients and their loved ones. Patients on our program are provided with care at home to improve the quality of their life through medical management, spiritual guidance and emotional support. Core services include nursing, doctor, social work, HHA, volunteer pastoral visits and medications, medical equipment and supplies delivered. The Jewish Hospice is culturally sensitive to the specialized needs of the diverse cultural and religious Jewish community, including Holocaust survivors, immigrants and adherents to Halacha. Today St. Mary's provides a unique, comprehensive, family-centered approach to the provision of palliative care services that encompass pain and symptom management, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual care within a holistic framework. St. Mary's palliative services are offered in 2 inpatient facilities, St. Mary's Hospital for Children (97 beds) in Bayside, NY and St. Mary's Rehabilitation Center for Children (44 beds) in Ossining, NY, as well via an extensive network of home care services. On average, St. Mary's provides palliative care services to more than 400 children annually. Since its inception, the palliative care program at St. Mary's has been expanded to introduce palliative care services earlier, such as when a chronic illness becomes progressive, causing a loss of function. Pediatric pain management is also a hallmark of the program and the staff at St. Mary's is committed to the philosophy that "no pain is OK" and works hard to assess pain before a child expresses it. Throughout the course of a child's illness a trained interdisciplinary team of professionals plan interventions to support the dignity of the child and the family's experience with empathy and culturally sensitive respect. We serve children from all over the five boroughs of New York City, as well as the surrounding counties of Westchester, Nassau, and Rockland. | | |
