Pain Awareness Month
Sep 1-30, 2010
Pain Awareness Month is a good time to reflect on how to become a better advocate for improved access to health care for all those who suffer with chronic pain.

Pain is a national health crisis that knows neither political parties nor constituent boundaries. It is the number one reason people seek medical help.

Chances are you know someone who lives with persistent pain - maybe it's you.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, one in four people report that they have had a problem with pain of any sort that persisted for more than 24 hours. A hallmark of many chronic conditions, pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined.

While a number of effective treatments and therapies exist, many Americans lack the ability to access care that, in some cases, is the difference between life and death. Under-treated chronic pain has serious physiological, psychological, social, and economic consequences.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day
Oct 9, 2010
World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world.

The theme for World Day 2010, which will take place on 9 October, is "Sharing the Care".

This Day is for people to engage in events and activities to raise awareness and funds to support the development of hospice and palliative care. All around the world, there are people who need hospice and palliative care who cannot access it.

The provision of quality palliative care for people living with life limiting illness, their family members and carers requires partnership by many different people and organisations. The core principle of hospice and palliative care is the focus on the needs of the patient and carers and the role of the multi-disciplinary team in meeting these needs.

The theme for this year "Sharing the Care" will highlight the role of individuals such as community members, family members and health professionals as well as different organisations such as governments, funders, health care centres, INGOs and hospices.

It is only through partnerships that we will achieve access to quality hospice and palliative care for all those who need it.

National Hospice and Palliative Care Month
Nov 1-30, 2010
The month of November is nationally recognized as Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Hospice organizations such as the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and the Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) as well as hospice and palliative care agencies across the country host events to increase awareness of palliative care and hospice.

If you are a hospice organization, you can use this opportunity to raise awareness of hospice and palliative care within your community. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Association has media talking points on the website that agencies can use to spread the word about hospice on radio, newspaper, and television. Some agencies host special fund raiser events in the month of November to raise awareness. Many agencies also use the month to celebrate employees, volunteers, and caregivers that provide loving care to patients.

As an individual, you can celebrate the month by making a donation to your local hospice or your state hospice association. To make a donation to the Hospice & Palliative Care Association of New York State click here.
